the Netherlands: what actually goes wrong

The setups that repeat in the Netherlands, what the law here really says, and what to do if the police turn up. Plain, unhysterical, written for adults.

Bijgewerkt 3 Sep 2026

The Netherlands is safe and the risks are financial. Inside licensed areas supervision is strict and little happens; at their edges the familiar scripts run - street dealers with fake goods, pickpockets, and the place around the corner with no prices on the menu.

The law where you are standing

The Netherlands legalised and licensed sex work in 2000, and it is treated as a regulated profession: a licence for the premises, registration with the Chamber of Commerce, tax like any other self-employed person. Buying is legal from 18. What is criminal is paying for sex with a minor, and - since the law was tightened - knowingly using a woman who has been coerced. Every city licenses independently, so what is permitted in Amsterdam is not automatically permitted in Rotterdam, and window work in particular is capped, zoned and shrinking.

The setups that repeat

Almost nothing here is exotic. The same four or five scripts run in every city in Europe, and the only reason they still work is that men who feel embarrassed do not compare notes.

Before you go, in ninety seconds

If the police turn up

Two adults in a private room is not, by itself, a police matter in most of Europe. Stay still, stay polite, do not run and do not volunteer a story. You are allowed to say you would prefer to speak with a lawyer. Do not sign a statement in a language you do not read.

Money

That list is why every profile on Red Light District Netherlands goes through a face and body video review before it is published. It does not make an evening safe. It removes the one failure that causes most of the rest, and it removes it before you have to ask anybody to prove anything to you.
